What is Feng Shui?
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art which believes in the total harmony of five elements of nature; fire, earth, metal, water and air. It believes in complete harmony between a person and his surroundings and brings in positive energy in your house.

Now let’s have a look at how you can include these five elements in your house.

Fire
In Feng Shui, light symbolizes a perfect synchronization of yin and yang and are said to bring in happiness and good fortune. The power of fire can be best harnessed by lighting up as many diyas and candles as you can in your house. Ditch those artificial lights and let your house bask in the warmth of pretty, earthen diyas.

Earth
Plants can liven up any drab old corner of your house with their freshness and also bring a lot of positive energy. Sweet smelling flowers and fruits are considered to be symbols of earth and you should use them all around your house. Get rid of the tacky plastic flowers and make way for fresh blossoms. Small herb plants can be placed in your kitchen as they have a wonderful aroma. Plants are important because they add a ‘green’ touch to your house and in feng shui, green is the colour which is known for diffusing stress and bringing in peace and quiet.

Water
Rangolis and floating candles not only look pretty, but also introduce the element of water in your home. Using water in your decorations is not enough to bring in Chi to your house. You must also ensure that water is not leaking anywhere as it creates disharmony. So ask a plumber to check all your taps and faucets before Diwali.

Metal
Metal décor items are in vogue these and days and you must definitely invest in some pretty candle stands, engraved vases, cutlery and even furniture. However, never go for anything that had pointed edges. Feng shui believes that sharp edges and corners obstruct the flow of energy and hence you should go for circular and oval shapes only.

Air
Your house should always smell fresh and clean air should circulate through your house. Open all the windows and doors and turn off your air conditioner this Diwali. Let natural air and breeze waft into your house and bring in good energy.

Besides this, you must ensure that your house is clutter free. Get rid of unnecessary decorations and fittings which obstruct the flow of energy. In feng shui, it is said that if a particular thing remains in the same place for long time periods, it starts draining the energy from that place. So rearrange your furniture a little, bring in new curtains, cushions and may be a carpet and see how your house looks refreshingly different.
