The Bra Code: 10 Things You Must Know About Your Pretty Underthings

By Vanessa Luis, Team iDiva

We all share a very intimate relationship with our bra. The right bra can 'lift' your mood, make you feel special and be your trusted companion any day or night ;). They protect your precious twosome all the way and yet we know so little about our bras. Well, that’s about to change; we bring to you The Bra Code, a list of healthy bra habits that will ensure the ultimate bra experience.

Know your bra size
They say eight out of 10 women wear the wrong bra and don’t even know it. If that is true, then maybe you are one of them. Are you buying the right sized bra? Reconsider you’re your habits when you go bra shopping. The best way to know the right size is to consult a professional at the bra store. But you can also measure your bra size yourself. Read our post on How to Know Your Perfect Bra Size today.

Your cup size matters
Knowing your cup size is the second most important thing about picking the right bra. Your cup size is directly related to your band size. Usually, whenever there is a change in your band size, there will be a change in your cup size too. That brings us to our next point...

Bra size can change over time
No woman wears the same sized bra all through her life. Every time a woman gets pregnant, gains or loses weight, her bra size changes. Even age takes a toll on the size of the breast and leads to a change in bra size. Wearing the same sized bra while your body changes through time, only means you are wearing the wrong sized bra.

Choose a comfortable fabric
Always choose a fabric that allows comfort as well as support. You don’t want to be stuck (literally) in something that makes you itch and sweat.

Hand-wash your bra
To ensure that your bra lasts longer, hand-wash it in cold water with a mild soap. After washing, hang it on a rack or leave it on a towel with the cups facing up to dry.

Never put a bra in the dryer
Never ever put a bra in a dryer because the heat in the dryer damages the elastic of the bra.

Different clothes deserve different bras
You cannot wear a single type of bra with every outfit. Tube tops, t-shirts, strappy dresses - all require different kinds of bras to keep your rack in place. Invest in appropriate bras to give you the best fit.

Never settle for a bra that doesn’t fit
No bra can last forever. After a few months, the bra will get loose whether you like it or not. Any bra that has gotten loose or tight needs to be packed off. Never compromise on the perfect fit.

Avoid wearing a bra for too long
Innumerable rumours state that wearing a bra for too long can be linked to breast cancer. None of them have any official proof but consider this; wearing a bra for long hours could cause discomfort, pain or even a rash.

Store your bra well
You take extra effort to find a suitable place for your clothes but settle for one drawer to thrust in all your bras! Have a proper system and arrange all your bras according to type or colour. Placing them on a hanger in a well spaced closet will also ensure they maintain their shape. You can also opt for bra storage cases which can fit in your drawer or suitcase while traveling.
