How to have baby-making sex

By Sarah Hecks

Not all positions are created equal

You’re both in the mood - your ovulation calendar is telling you the timing is right, so how to you increase your chance of becoming pregnant? Missionary position? Doggy-style?  While it’s possible to get pregnant in any position, it appears not all of them are created equal when trying to conceive. These tips will make it a little more likely.

Let gravity do the hard work
Sperm can be notoriously lazy, so it always helps to give them a gentle nudge in the right direction of your cervix. Getting sperm to swim up your fallopian tubes is the key, so give them a helping hand - by letting gravity do some of the hard work - either by lifting your bottom and legs in the air or leaning them against a wall. “A great position to try to help the process is the missionary position with a pillow underneath your hips to give you an extra lift, suggests relationship expert and author of Sex Academy – Essential Lessons in Seduction & Spectacular Sex, Dr Pam Spurr. “It may seem a little boring as a position but the deep penetration close to your cervix will really help with conception. And with lots of caressing and stroking of your erogenous zones during penetration it won't seem boring!”

Relax
“It might seem a simple suggestion but it is can be one that is overlooked,” says Dr Pam Spurr (drpam.co.uk), “Don’t rush to get out of bed once you’ve had sex, instead lie on your side and draw your knees up, put your feet against the headboard or relax for a while.”

Have an orgasm
It’s official - a post-coital study of women found that those who had orgasms and enjoyed sex retained more sperm than those who didn't. “It's all to do with the muscular contractions you experience during an orgasm, which draw the sperm upward,” explains Dr Spurr.

Let him go behind
Doing it doggy-style is guaranteed to get your partner's sperm close to that all-important organ, the cervix. Want another position for deep penetration? “Lie side by side as you have intercourse with him behind you in classic spoons where he can angle in for deep penetration,” suggests Dr Pam Spurr, “again it should help with getting your partner’s sperm closer to your cervix.”

Don't be on top
“You don't want to be on top at the end of the action,” says Dr Pam Spurr, “as all his sperm may come rushing back down again.” By all means, have fun in this position but as soon as you know it’s getting serious make sure you switch over to maximise you conception chances and after ejaculation make sure your partner stays inside for a few minutes before withdrawing slowly,” Dr Spurr adds.
