Interesting Health Tips from Around the World

By TNN

The world is a huge place. And with thousands of cultures, come tons of different health practices. Here we select some of the most effective habits that promise to keep you healthy and fit.

Spice it up like the Mexicans
Moderately pungent foods are actually good for your health (and help you lose weight too!) — so take some inspiration from the Mexicans and use abundant spices in your food.
Tip: Studies have shown that while turmeric can help slow Alzheimer’s, chilli peppers increase your metabolism and help you lose weight faster by making you eat slowly — giving your brain extra time to realise it is full.

Take naps like the Spanish
The Spanish are known to take their afternoon siestas (and our very own Goans, too) and reports say that the Japanese are following suit by indulging in power naps at work to increase productivity. Experts have long said that sleeping adequately can not only lower stress levels and improve memory but also helps you lose weight and live longer.
Tip: A study has revealed that napping for about 20 to 30 minutes, four times a week had a considerably lesser risk of dying of heart disease.

Eat more fish like the Icelandic and Japanese
While many people have no qualms about eating red meat (even though it causes heart disease), what they don’t realise is that they can get healthier protein from seafood. The Icelandic and Japanese diets swear by fish in their meals because of its health properties.
Tip: A diet high in Omega-3-rich fish is known to cut down the chances of one suffering from seasonal affective disorder especially during the monsoon.

Use fresh ingredients like the Japanese, Russians and Italians
While processed and ready-to-eat foods might seem to be an easy, quick and convenient solution, they are loaded with harmful additives and high is salt and sugar content making them very unhealthy. Take a leaf out of the Japanese, Russians and Italians who prefer to eat fresh, seasonal foods, that do wonders for your health.
Tip: Make it a habit to visit a local market every couple of days to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. Plan a menu for the week so that you don’t waste time wondering what to cook.

Eat without any distractions like the French and Italians
Whether you’re eating alone or with someone, make it a point to switch of the TV and keep your cellphones away. And never eat in a tearing hurry. Eat like the French and Italians, who like to savour their meals.
Tip: Pay attention to what you eat — focus on the flavours, textures and colours. Not only will you enjoy it more but when you eat slowly, there are lesser chances of you overeating.
